What is SEO and What Can It Do? How to Drive Traffic to Your Website for Free!

One of the things I’ve learned over the years, while using the internet, was web design. I learned a lot about designing websites including HTML code and writing scripts. One of the things I neglected to learn, however, was SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

I rarely saw this as an important factor in creating a website, mainly because I didn’t understand exactly what search engine optimization was and how it can benefit my website. Many people still don’t and very few websites on the internet today take full advantage of this important traffic-generating element for their websites.

Simply designing an attractive website is not enough. No matter how good your website may be, you still need to get visitors there. Submitting your website to an internet search engine is one cheap and easy method to do this. However, SEO plays an important part in increasing your traffic through search engines. There’s a lot to learn about search engine optimization and a great deal of websites offer paid and free services for SEO.

One of the mistakes I made, and one that a great number of us still make today, was assuming that, by merely submitting my website to a search engine, I was going to generate traffic. This, of course, is far from the truth.

There are thousands of search engines and search directories on the internet and the majority of internet users know by now that billions of web pages are piled onto these listings, making it nearly impossible for searchers to find most of them. But even if someone does find your web pages through an internet search engine theirs a good chance they might not visit them.

Even the smallest search engines can turn up hundreds of thousands of results for a single search. It would be physically impossible for a user to read through every single result - let alone visit every web page.

That’s where search engine optimization plays a big role in improving the amount of targeted traffic to your website, generated by search engines. Having used the internet and internet search engines yourself, I’m sure that you are very aware of the fact that almost no one will bother looking at results beyond the first page and there are even fewer people that will click on them.

My first SEO campaign was a bit of an embarrassment - to say the least. I was boggled as I found that some of the biggest search engines weren’t even accepting my website for submission and my pages weren’t turning up on Google. The other search engines were burying my pages behind millions of results where no one would find them.

So I started reading books on search engine optimization and researching the websites that were performing wonderfully on these search engines to see where I had gone wrong. After many failures and a few small successes I was finally starting to see some positive results.

In summation, we can say that search engine optimization is a strategic way of improving how well your web pages rank on a search engine for a particular keyword or phrase. Your overall aim should be to get a top 10 ranking for your search-term. This could take several months, but it will be well worth the effort.

There are, of course, a number of other ways to drive traffic to your website; some of them being more dynamic than others. However, many of these methods can be costly and sometimes they are more suitable for certain types of websites.

SEO is not the ideal way to generate massive amounts of traffic for your website. This is because it is becoming highly competitive with so many websites offering the same or similar information. It is, however, an ideal way to maintain a steady and constant flow of traffic to your website, through a minimal cost vs. maximum benefit strategy.

SEO to Become a Dinner Party Topic

Thanks to a ground-breaking agreement between Dell and Google, SEO may soon be a mainstream topic of conversation. Dell, the world’s leading maker of personal computers, has announced that it is testing a pre-installed package of Google software, including a Google-powered Dell home page, Google Desktop Search, and a Google Toolbar.

While the home page and Desktop Search will be an undeniable boost to Google’s share of the Search market, and maybe even a threat to Microsoft’s desktop dominance, it’s the pre-installation of the Google Toolbar that will be of most interest to SE marketers and optimizers around the world.

Currently a specialist ‘industry tool’ used predominantly by SE practitioners, the Google Toolbar may soon be automatically available to hundreds of thousands of mainstream computer users. As a result, Google PageRank and, by extension, search engine marketing and optimization look set to become part of mainstream vocabulary. (Well, maybe that’s a little optimistic… Perhaps they’re more likely to become part of the vocab of the computer savvy mainstream.)

So what does this all mean to SEO and SEM? In my humble opinion, the four most important implications of the Dell-Google agreement are:

1) Business decision makers will finally ‘get’ SEO

Although not overly helpful to SEMs and SEOs, Google PageRank is an ideal hook for busy decision makers. It’s very simple (in that it’s just a mark out of ten) and measurable, and it’s just THERE; you don’t have to go out of your way to see the PageRank of a site. It’s exactly what decision makers need to get their collective heads around SEO. They don’t have the time or inclination to understand the complexities of SERPs, IBLs, spiders, indexing, keyword phrases, metatags, article PR, SEO copywriting, etc. For better or worse, PageRank eliminates all shades of gray, leaving the two colors many decision makers understand best: black and white.

2) Business will become aware of the importance of PageRank

While most business decision makers are aware that a good search engine ranking is good for business, they’re not yet aware that a bad PageRank is bad for business. But with the Google Toolbar at their disposal, they soon will be. Decision makers will immediately start to use PageRank as a one-shot assessment of the credibility and authority of every website they visit. And in the process, they’ll become painfully aware of what their own PageRank says about their company.

3) Business will be more Search-proactive

Once decision makers realize that a bad PageRank is bad for business, they’ll be more likely to be proactive about their search engine ranking.

4) More businesses will dedicate a budget to Search

PageRank will become just a part of ‘doing business’. Just like TV, radio, and newspapers, it will be proactively communicating with decision makers, each and every day. While the mechanics of a high search ranking will remain a mystery to most, the Search DOMAIN will no longer be considered a black art, and SEMs and SEOs will no longer be considered witch-doctors. This will make decision makers far more comfortable dedicating a budget to Search (especially as they now have something measurable to grab a hold of - see point 1 above).

Conclusion

It appears that Google has once again made a very astute business decision. For better or worse, they’ve improved their position in Search and made significant inroads into the desktop software market. Will they threaten Microsoft’s desktop dominance? We’ll have to wait ‘n see. Will they enrich the SEM / SEO industry? In my humble opinion, yes! Google may not be everyone’s favorite search engine, but if they bring PageRank into the mainstream, the Search industry will finally attract the percentage of corporate advertising spend it deserves.

Google Maps adds “my maps”

Google MyMapsI have been wonderin for a long time when Google Maps itself will finally jump on the “mash up / user generated content” bandwagon instead of just providing the basis for such services.

Well, it has finally happened. Since today, the familiar Google Maps page features a new tab - “My Maps”. After signing on with any Google account, it allows users to draw on a maps, annotate it, add photos, text and other media, save that, and share it.

An exciting move - and for sure very challenging for existing similar services like Platial, wayfaring, wikimapia, tagzania etc. Services like OpenStreetMap or Plazes might be less affected, since they aim at different goals. But classical “annotation” services might find themselves in an interesting position…

It seems as if finding the right niche in neogeography services has just become a lot more important.

The Free Lunch is Over: Google soon to charge for 'Pro' Version of New Blogger

The Free Lunch is Over: Google soon to charge for 'Pro' Version of New Blogger

Well folks, I guess it was only a matter of time. According to sources Google's New Blogger will soon be called New Blogger "Pro". Apparently it's Navbar has proven to be a dismal failure.

According to a Google executive:

"Responding to customer complaints, some time ago we introduced the Navbar to replace ugly Google ads that were once placed prominently on top of all Blogspot blogs, as we phased out the old Pro Blogger version.

Unfortunately it has not produced like we had hoped. Very few bloggers are clicking on the "Next Blog" link due to complaints of rampant spam blogs. The "Flag Blog" has also been abused by malicious users eating up our time and resources tracking down bogus complaints.

So the only way we can make this work is to reintroduce a "Pro" version for New Blogger. It will be called New Blogger Pro and we trust everyone will understand that the recent upgrades we've made are worth the $9 per month that we intend to charge. It was either that or bring back the old ads again.

Current users of New Blogger will have to upgrade within the month of April, otherwise their blog will be deleted. Thank for your continued support of Blogger. Source".

Well there you have it folks, the free lunch is over. Wordpress here we come.

How you’re marketing on April Fool’s Day

April Fool's Day 1

A few years back, on April 1st, I was catching a flight from Belfast to Edinburgh. Me and the rest of the passengers were surprised to hear the captain announce, “We will shortly be arriving in Amsterdam.”

It’s amusing what some people are coming up with for April Fool’s Day marketing campaigns.

April Fool's Day 2

Google launched their Gmail on April Fool’s Day 2004. This year they’re offering free wireless broadband through your toilet.

Virgin Atlantic previously made us aware of their genetic modification of butterflies so they could advertise on their wings.

How about when Virgin Cola released this one:

In 1996 Virgin Cola announced that in the interest of consumer safety it had integrated a new technology into its cans. When the cola passed its sell-by date, the liquid would react with the metal in the can, turning the can itself bright blue. Virgin warned that consumers should therefore avoid purchasing all blue cans. The joke was that Pepsi had recently unveiled its newly designed cans. They were bright blue. (via Museum of Hoaxes)

Even WordPress created an April Fool’s post.

April Fool's Day 3

Capitiol Blue Hill offer up 10 of the best April Fool’s Day pranks ever pulled off, including this one for the typographers amongst you:

In 1977, British newspaper The Guardian published a seven-page supplement for the 10th anniversary of San Serriffe, a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semicolon-shaped islands. A series of articles described the geography and culture of the two main islands, named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse.

M Show Receives A-List Nomination Paperwork

I got a package in the mail from Jason Calacanis asking me to fill out the application for the A-List. It’s pretty straightforward, you send them $1,095 and that gets things rolling. If you blog daily for 3 years at the end of your probation they flip a switch and you get your choice of a job at Edelman, Crayon or Sequoia plus a guaranteed 250k visitors per month.

Plus once you’re in the circle you get stuff like cars, houses, laptops, etc. for free (as long as you blog about them of course).

They have a special meeting annually where they talk about and laugh at the D-Listers who wreck blogger meetups just by showing up and they also review the B-List to see who’s eligible to get off the farm team. I think Chris Pirillo (dude, THIS is funny) has something to do with it because it’s codenamed Smurfdex. Obviously I’m ecstatic about the chance at the big show, don’t worry, I won’t forget all the little people. I’d promise to blog all about it if/when I make it, but of course the first rule of A-List is “Never talk about A-List”.

Ok, that’s the best I’ve got for you for April Fools. There’s some other funny stuff (better than my lame attempt) such as Seth Godin’s Captain Danger Stunt Monkey Baby Chute (I need to do a radio spot for that), Google hits twice with Toilet based WiFi, and GMail Paper services. Please feel free to add links to any other good pranks in your comments.

And it’s Sunday, that means a new episode of the Best Business Podcast, The M Show, including an interview with the Author of The Strategy Paradox. This week’s show is out early because we may be putting an offer in on a home today. More to follow…

Free High-speed Sewer-net

It appears that previous rumors of Google deploying free WiFi were a bit premature. Rather than using the airwaves as their vehicle for free high-speed Internet for all, the search behemoth heading to the sewers. They introduced in a press release today the introduction of Google TiSP (BETA).

The Toilet Internet Service Provider (TiSP) project is a self-installed, ad-supported online service that will be offered entirely free to any consumer with a WiFi-capable PC and a toilet connected to a local municipal sewage system.

The site also sports a helpful (and informative) page that documents how to get started with Google TiSP.

Google’s TiSP System

Happy April 1st.

I migliori pesci d’aprile 2007

April Fools Jokes 2007: The Google Drive is Real?

Everyone has been hoping for a long time that Google would soon release a Google Drive service for users to store all of their files. Google Blogoscoped did an amazing job of setting up an “official” blog for what would appear to be for the Google Drive:

Google Drive

However, it is currently in the “Beta” stage right now and is only available to a limited number of people:

We have heard users complain from time to time that we don’t provide enough space for them to store emails, photos, and files. Realizing the growing demand of the Web 2.0 users, over the past year we have been working on a ultimate backup system.

Today, our team pleased to announce the launch of Google Drive beta, an online file backup system from Google that integrated with Google Services like Gmail, Picasa Web Albums, Google Calendars, and many others.

This service will only be available to a limited amount of users during its beta stage. If you are invited, you can find a link called “Drive” in the Gmail Navigation Links.

Does anyone see the “Drive” shortcut in their Gmail Navigation Links? ;)

Stay tuned as we feature a wide array of April Fools Jokes throughout the day!

Google Acquires CafePress, Launches Revolutionary AdWear

Google AdWearIn a flurry of Google-related news today (and even something from Microsoft), the company announced their intent to acquire the Internet-based custom clothes company CafePress.com.  Similar to the process with last year’s YouTube acquisition, the CafePress brand will remain intact as the company begins a multi-year technology integration.  With the acquisition, Google will also initiate a new service, dubbed AdWear, enabling personalized direct advertising on clothing.

In the AdWear program, advertisers have access to select the type of clothes they want to have their ads appear on, and may even select based on the sizing.  This flexibility and personalization is a “classic Google approach” as it allows the advertisers to directly target the markets they want to reach.  Thus a company such as Trojan could purchase ads on customized thongs and pajamas, while Krispy Kreme could focus on plus-sized clothing.

“Never before have advertisers had such control over asserting their brands on a truly individualized basis,” said Google’s Marissa Mayer.  “With AdWear, companies can finally reach out directly to the markets they have sought after for years.  We expect to see numerous cost-per-clothes campaigns begin shortly after the acquisition is closed.”

In a not-too-surprising move, Google further announced that all future products made by the CafePress team will ship to consumer for free.  Two sample designs are shown below:

#98 We missed a week, so this one's longer

Tangents upon tangents, we wander hopelessly toward the inevitable episode 100...well, it's inevitable because we keep putting out shows. People actually seem to care if we don't :)

Well, it looks like we’ve been scooped!

Rumors of OCLC’s pending sale to a certain search appliance company have made a full round on the Web, and we at OCLC didn’t even get a memo! (N.B. Google did have an announcement today, but it wasn’t really OCLC-related...) Hrrmph!

I direct you to the following posts:
Google Buys OCLC, Announces New Products
Google Acquires OCLC, World Domination Near Total
Google Buying OCLC: An Early Analysis

This news represents a significant speed-up of the calendar for such a merger as rumored earlier by Ed Valauskas (as reported here) which gave us till at least 2014.

Frankly, we were hoping for the additional time to allow us to try and clean up those pesky ending-marks-of-punctuation* shortfalls in WorldCat (there is company lore that OCLC Research has a full-stop recycling bin in its office area – they take some full-stops out of the records, put the full-stops back in the records ; there have even been persistent rumors that our Dewey Services colleagues once thought about approaching ALA Editions to sell the surplus as micro-Dots (for those who remember poor Dot, a cheerful Dewey icon now relegated to a screensaver, sniff. ;( but ALA chose to offer other options instead (search "Dewey").)

“News” indeed! (Chuckle!)

Well in the spirit of things then, watch this space for the announcement of the availability of the Google WorldCat deluxe card catalog – 100M+ card sets and counting... ;)

(*For you non-catalogers, library cataloging rules provide simple-yet-difficult-to-follow rules regarding the correct marks of punctuation to separate different parts of a catalog entry. And yes, Alice, I can sense your eyes starting to glaze over now... ;)

The Gagmeisters of Google

Every year on April 1st, the folks at Google break out of their cubicles and offer up some zany prank to unleash on the wired universe.

The First Google prank came around on April 1, 2000 when the newly arrived Internet Goliath offered up the MentalPlex, a process that would read our minds and seek out information for us.

Over subsequent years the smart alecks at Google suggested that jobs were waiting at a soon to open lunar outpost for the Google empire called the "Copernicus Centre", the only problem with that prank is that it came out at the same time as the announcement that G Mail had arrived, it seems at the time more people figured the lunar jobs story was more believable than the new mail service.

Another famous Google prank was the Google Gulp, which no doubt had 7-11 running to research to find a way to beat back the invasion of silicon soda.

Last year, Google played matchmaker to the computer generation with Google Romance, where the quest for love was just a simple search problem!

This years epic takes the computer geeks of the Silicon Valley back to the days of the ultimate in Fart jokes, with the TISP, the convergence of wireless technology and bodily fluids!

Google Tech Talks

ABSTRACT
This is not your father's fusion reactor! Forget everything you know about conventional thinking on nuclear fusion: high-temperature plasmas, steam turbines, neutron radiation and even nuclear waste are a thing of the past. Goodbye thermonuclear fusion; hello inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IEC), an old idea that's been made new. While the international community debates the fate of the politically-turmoiled $12 billion ITER (an experimental thermonuclear reactor), simple IEC reactors are being built as high-school science fair projects.

Dr. Robert Bussard, former Asst. Director of the Atomic Energy Commission and founder of Energy Matter Conversion Corporation (EMC2), has spent 17 years perfecting IEC, a fusion process that converts hydrogen and boron directly into electricity producing helium as the only waste product. Most of this work was funded by the Department of Defense, the details of which have been under seal... until now.

Dr. Bussard will discuss his recent results and details of this potentially world-altering technology, whose conception dates back as far as 1924, and even includes a reactor design by Philo T. Farnsworth (inventor of the scanning television).

Can a 100 MW fusion reactor be built for less than Google's annual electricity bill? Come see what's possible when you think outside the thermonuclear box and ignore the herd.

Luis von Ahn is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where he also received his Ph.D. in 2005. Previously, Luis obtained a B.S. in mathematics from Duke University in 2000. He is the recipient of a Microsoft Research Fellowship.

ABSTRACT
Tasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs. This talk introduces a paradigm for utilizing human processing power to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve. Traditional approaches to solving such problems focus on improving software. I advocate a novel approach: constructively channel human brainpower using computer games. For example, the ESP Game, described in this talk, is an enjoyable online game -- many people play over 40 hours a week -- and when people play, they help label images on the Web with descriptive keywords. These keywords can be used to significantly improve the accuracy of image search. People play the game not because they want to help, but because they enjoy it.

I describe other examples of "games with a purpose": Peekaboom, which helps determine the location of objects in images, and Verbosity, which collects common-sense knowledge. I also explain a general approach for constructing games with a purpose.

At the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner, journalists presented youth scholarships and awards to colleagues for their work during the previous year. President Bush’s presentation included an impersonator, Steve Bridges, who 'interpreted' the president’s remarks for laymen. Following the president, comedian Stephen Colbert made humorous remarks about various current events and the relationship between the press and the White House. He also presented a video of a mock press conference which ended in a chase scene featuring long-time correspondent Helen Thomas.
