Google Earth urged to remove "Mount Hitler" name

Following is a Q&A with freelance business writer M. Sharon Baker:

By Greg Shemitz

Q: What’s your background as a journalist? What media outlets do you write for?

A: After 15 years as a reporter for daily and weekly newspapers, I have recently become a full-time freelance writer and media relations specialist. I regularly write for my former employer, The Puget Sound Business Journal, as well as a number of other publications. My stories have appeared in newspapers and magazines such as The Seattle Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Seattle Business Magazine, and Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal, as well as trade publications such as Hockey Business News, Credit Union Times and CableWorld, among others.

Q: What types of stories are most likely to pique your interest? What kind of material should public relations people be on the lookout for?

A: I love writing about small businesses, and agriculture and food stories are of particular interest. That said, I also like hearing about new interactive technologies, interesting chief executive officers, and people who are making a difference, whether it be by offering services or creating new products. I am interested in the meaning or reasons behind a story. I don’t write new product stories.

Q: What recent projects have given you the most satisfaction or are most reflective of your work?

A: I had a lot of fun writing about the impact getting on “Oprah” had on several small companies, covering the Emerald Downs racetrack, and the Seattle Mariners baseball team from a business perspective, all for the Puget Sound Business Journal; and writing a short piece for Seattle Business on a gaming company called BaffleGab.

Oprah story: www.bizjournals.com/seattle/stories/2005/11/28/focus1.html
Emerald Downs story: http://seattle.bizjournals.com/seattle/stories/2006/04/17/focus6.html

Q: What industry publications, Web sites and services do you refer to?

A: I am a regular reader of the Wall Street Journal, journalism site Poynter Online, Gangrey.com, Cyberjournalist.net, PR Newswire, Marketing Sherpa and various writing sites. I do a lot of specific searches using Google, and have used ProfNet to find sources for stories.

Q: What do you like/dislike about dealing with PR people? Any tips you’d like to give them?

A: Since a lot of my business is working with PR people, and sometimes being one, I like them! When I was a regular staffer, I viewed working with PR people as a collaborative effort " cultivating relationships is the name of the game. I was able to break a lot of stories first because I always delivered on my word, kept confidential information to myself, and was upfront and honest. I understand and respect both sides of the PR/journalist equation, and that makes all the difference.

Q: How and when do you prefer to be contacted?

A: E-mail is best, typically in the morning.

Q: What’s the best way to send news releases to you? Mail, e-mail or fax?

A: E-mail, but I prefer not to get press releases, just story ideas, please.

Q: Do you accept photos/graphics/artwork? If so, how do you want to receive them? Any specific formatting requirements?

A: Don’t send art unless I’m specifically working with you. Typically JPEG files, 300 dpi.

Reports: Microsoft search chief leaving

(InfoWorld) - The executive in charge of leading Microsoft's battle against search giant Google is leaving the company to form his own venture, according to published reports.

The Wall Street Journal reported late Wednesday that Chris Payne, corporate vice president of Windows Live search, plans to leave his job and form a company in Seattle. According to the report, his departure is part of a set of changes in the organization since Microsoft appointed former Ask.com executive Steve Berkowitz last year as senior vice president to lead its online group.

Microsoft has declined to comment on reports of Payne's leaving, and his biography remained on Microsoft's Web site Thursday.

According to the bio, Payne is in charge of "delivering the best search experience for customers and helping them find the information that is important to them," as well as overseeing Windows Live Shopping.

Published reports did not make it clear if Payne plans to leave Microsoft for his own reasons or if the company is letting him go. However, Microsoft's search and online business has not been faring well against Google since Microsoft unveiled a plan in November 2005 to rename its search engine Windows Live Search and develop other Web-based services under that moniker in an attempt to take more of the online advertising market. The company at the time also announced a small-business hosted package called Office Live.

Just last week in a conference call, financial analysts from UBS Investment Research said Microsoft's search business is "massively underperforming" against Google in both the incidence of search queries and in advertising revenue. They also predicted that the gap between the two companies in this market would not be closing anytime soon unless Microsoft takes drastic measures to ramp up its search strategy by striking deals with enterprise partners and finding legal ways to link its online offerings to its popular enterprise software products.

Revenue from Microsoft's online properties also remained relatively flat over the last fiscal year despite the company's increased investment to bolster this part of its business.

Before taking over Microsoft's Windows Live Search team, Payne was vice president of MSN.com, where he managed MSN Search, the MSN.com home page, MSN Autos, MSN Entertainment, MSNBC, Slate, and the MSN Channels properties.

Wikipedia founder says to challenge Google, Yahoo

(InfoWorld) - Yahoo has started testing a social-network component for Yahoo Answers, a search engine in which people post questions and answers that have become a highly popular service for the company.

On Thursday, Yahoo Answers Network debuted as a beta service designed to let the 90 million users of this question-and-answer search engine create "personal networks" with each other. They can also invite acquaintances who don't use Yahoo Answers to join their network.

People will be able to see if other members of their Yahoo Answers network have posted an answer or a question or flagged someone else's question as interesting, according to Yahoo.

Yahoo plans to continue enhancing Yahoo Answers Network with features like the ability to block and ignore users and to import contacts from other services like the Yahoo Messenger instant messaging network.

The move is consistent with Yahoo's aggressive strategy in social computing, a hallmark of the Web 2.0 era. In recent years, Yahoo has been busy acquiring social-computing companies like Flickr, del.icio.us, and, more recently, MyBlogLog as well as revamping existing sites and services with social features like tagging and user-generated content.

Yahoo Answers is a bright spot for the company. Archrival Google had a competing service called Google Answers that never took off and was put out to pasture last year. In late December of last year, market researcher Hitwise Pty. reported that among Q&A-type search engines, Yahoo Answers held a 96 percent of share of visits in the U.S. Answerbag ranked second with 2.04 percent, and Microsoft's Windows Live Q&A came in third with 1.02 percent.

By giving this new feature to Yahoo Answers, with its large and growing audience, Yahoo might be able to improve its standing in social networking. Its blogging and social networking-site Yahoo 360, introduced in March 2005, hasn't become as popular as Yahoo expected. In November at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Bradley Horowitz, Yahoo's vice president of product strategy, said the company might remake Yahoo 360, but the company hasn't rolled out any significant enhancements to it yet.

Last year there were insistent rumors that Yahoo was shopping around for a social-networking site and that it held conversations with Facebook that didn't yield a deal. However, Yahoo has massive numbers of users in services like Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Mail, Flickr, del.icio.us and Yahoo Photos that some analysts have pointed out could be leveraged to create social networks.

Yahoo Answers Network could indicate a strategy focused on creating distinct social networks within individual and already popular services, rather than on having a single social-networking site that competes head to head with the likes of MySpace.com, Friendster and Facebook. In fact, new social-networking providers are targeting their sites toward specific audiences and topics, instead of trying to cast a broad net like MySpace.com and the other leaders in this market.

More information about Yahoo Answers Network can be found here.

Chris Richardson Lives

And no, I don’t mean the American Idol Chris Richardson either (I was here first). I’ve been away since Valentine’s Day and the reason for that is because we (as in iEntry) have been putting some effort into our software download site, WebmasterFree.com - and because I’m kinda proficient in these matters, I was asked lead the charge.

So before I digress away, I’d like to invite those of you looking for software applications to enhance your computing experience to drop by WebmasterFree and take a look at some of the software we have listed.

Speaking of the other Chris (from here on to be known as “OC”), from looking at the log files and I noticed we had some visitors apparently looking for OC and because WebProBlog is ranked on the first page for that particular term (Chris Richardson not OC), some stragglers wound up here and probably left disappointed. Ah, the beauty of sharing a name with someone gaining popularity…

Another thing I’ve noticed since I’ve been associated with the OC is Google’s search results - you know the ones people complain about not adjusting to site changes quickly enough - have already been adjusted giving the Idol CR the number 1 search position for the Chris Richardson keyphrase (which has about 2,670,000 results associated with it)…

I guess that gives hope to those of you targeting a keyword or phrase that isn’t that ultra-competitive.  If Google thinks your site is quality and it doesn’t employ any spam techniques, it will - in all likelihood - climb the search engine charts quite rapidly.

As for the Idol, I would wish my namesake luck, but I don’t even watch the show after try-outs are over…

Sanford: Free WiFi

A few years ago, I remember answering a survey from the City of Sanford about services it provided. Actually, the only thing I remember is the free-form part where I mentioned the service I wanted - free WiFi. According to this article in the Orlando Sentinel, it looks like Sanford is getting ready to unleash a free WiFi service.

I'm pleased that it's happening. St. Cloud did it. Albuquerque provides free WiFi. Google provides free WiFi for San Francisco. Orlando provides free WiFi by Lake Eola.

Why is it important? The Internet is a ubiquitous communication system, and it's become a modern fact of living. Cities provide services of value to their residents, including parks and recreational facilities. While free WiFi may end up getting used for recreation, I consider it an enhancement to foster business. Perhaps that's why Sanford will start this service in its Downtown business district.

This doesn't mean you should give you your existing Internet provider. Chances are good that service may not be consistent in the beginning, and it probably won't reach most homes in the Sanford area. I could've used a free WiFi in my neighborhood this week. One of my furry little dogs dug up the cable in my back yard and chewed through it while I was at work. Nothing like spending your day at home waiting for the Bright House guy to come over and patch things up again.

For those who do get to use it, remember to use your firewall software. I'm sure someone will be online scanning for opportunities to abuse the privilege.

Even so, Sanford is stepping into a modern age by providing a WiFi service to its residents and businesses. Let's see how it works next week. I'll have to drag my laptop down to one of the fine restaurants in Downtown Sanford and see how things go.

ABSTRACT
This is not your father's fusion reactor! Forget everything you know about conventional thinking on nuclear fusion: high-temperature plasmas, steam turbines, neutron radiation and even nuclear waste are a thing of the past. Goodbye thermonuclear fusion; hello inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IEC), an old idea that's been made new. While the international community debates the fate of the politically-turmoiled $12 billion ITER (an experimental thermonuclear reactor), simple IEC reactors are being built as high-school science fair projects.

Dr. Robert Bussard, former Asst. Director of the Atomic Energy Commission and founder of Energy Matter Conversion Corporation (EMC2), has spent 17 years perfecting IEC, a fusion process that converts hydrogen and boron directly into electricity producing helium as the only waste product. Most of this work was funded by the Department of Defense, the details of which have been under seal... until now.

Dr. Bussard will discuss his recent results and details of this potentially world-altering technology, whose conception dates back as far as 1924, and even includes a reactor design by Philo T. Farnsworth (inventor of the scanning television).

Can a 100 MW fusion reactor be built for less than Google's annual electricity bill? Come see what's possible when you think outside the thermonuclear box and ignore the herd.

ABSTRACT
Tasks like image recognition are trivial for humans, but continue to challenge even the most sophisticated computer programs. This talk introduces a paradigm for utilizing human processing power to solve problems that computers cannot yet solve. Traditional approaches to solving such problems focus on improving software. I advocate a novel approach: constructively channel human brainpower using computer games. For example, the ESP Game, described in this talk, is an enjoyable online game -- many people play over 40 hours a week -- and when people play, they help label images on the Web with descriptive keywords. These keywords can be used to significantly improve the accuracy of image search. People play the game not because they want to help, but because they enjoy it.

I describe other examples of "games with a purpose": Peekaboom, which helps determine the location of objects in images, and Verbosity, which collects common-sense knowledge. I also explain a general approach for constructing games with a purpose.

I certainly don't mind discussing the subject, but I often think it would be great if more people could see it for themselves. Well, now you can. We invite you to take a sneak peek inside Google and hear straight from some of our female engineers what life here is really like.

Of course, our goal of recruiting as many gifted female engineers as we can also means encouraging young women who are still in school. So I'd like to issue a hearty congrats to the winners of this year's Anita Borg scholarships.
